1946 წელს, ოც წელზე მეტი ხნით ადრე, სანამ სალვადორ დალის ნაკლებად ცნობილი ილუსტრაციები შეიქმნებოდა წიგნისთვის „ალისა საოცრებათა ქვეანაში“,  ამბიციურმა გამომცემლობა - „Doubleday publishing house“-მა სიურრეალისტს მიშელ დე მონტენის ესეების კრებულის ლიმიტირებული გამოცემისთივს (1000 ეგზემპლარი) ილუსტრაციების შექმნა შესთავაზა.

42 წლის დალი, რომელიც ამ დროს მონტენის გონების თაყვანისმცემელი იყო გამომცემლობის შეთავაზებას დათანხმდა. წიგნი 1947 წელს გამოიცა - ლიტერატურისა და ხელოვნების კვეთის მშვენიერი ნიმუში, განსხვავდებოდა ყველა მსგავსი პროექტისგან, თუ არ ჩავთვლით ჰენრი მატისის მიერ ილუსტრირებულ „ულისეს“.

შეზღუდული ტირაჟით (1000 ეგზემპლარი) დაბეჭდილ თითოეულ წიგნს სალვადორ დალის ავტოგრაფი ახლავს თან.
